Day of the Dead Candy Charcuterie Board

Leaves are fallin’, y’all! It’s scary how quickly the season has crept up on us as we gear up for all things pumpkin spice. While festivities may look a little different this year, it doesn’t mean you can’t treat yourself to all the same spook-tacular fun at home. Our newest 3 Piece Sugar Skull Candy Bento Box has certainly gotten us into the spirit, and we’re celebrating with a deliciously sweet but adorably spooky candy board inspired by our latest treats.

Tip 1: Choose the perfect platter for your candy charcuterie board

You’re the hostesst with the mostest, so you know that presentation is everything. First, you will need a platter or sturdy board that is going to provide the perfect foundation to hold your spooky sweets. You may wish to dust off that rectangular cheese board and (finally) put it to good use this year, but many candy charcuterie board experts recommend a round board for symmetry. It will make your candy choices really pop, and clearly we are all about eye candy!

Okay, we know that you’re ready to start plating your sweets, but before you do, it’s a good idea to place a round sheet of wax paper over the board first. This will keep the candy from sticking and it will make clean up easier for you (and who doesn’t want that?).

Tip 2: Curate your sweets for a brightly-colored candy charcuterie board

Now, it’s time for the fun to begin! When it comes to choosing the perfect assortment of candy for your board, make sure to choose candies of different shapes and sizes to provide more eye-popping dimension and to complement each other (especially if you’re creating a color-themed candy board).

If you would like to add some festive autumnal colors to your candy board, we certainly have a variety of options. Mix and match our spooky-themed sweets like our new Sugar Skulls with our vibrant, fall flavors and colors like our limited-edition Red Apple Caramels and Cranberry Cocktail Bears.

One thing is certain: you definitely don’t want to skimp on the sweets. The perfect candy board should contain a generous scoopful of at least 15 different candies.

Tip 3: Start with an outline/border and begin building

If you’ve ever put together a cheese board, you know that you should always place the largest pieces of cheese first. The same rule applies for layering candy on a candy charcuterie board! Place the largest pieces down first, stacking them horizontally into little clusters, working your way around the outside of the platter until the border is complete. If you have taller candies (like our Sour Rainbows or Long-Stem Roses ), you can create more dimension by stacking them vertically.

Tip 4: Place brightest candies first and fill in with neutral candies

It’s important to alternate the different colors and flavors to give the candy charcuterie board more depth, starting with brighter candies such as our Zombie Brains, Sugar Skulls, and Red Roses. Balance out some of the more colorful candies with our neutral sweets such as Bonita Berries, Chocolate Covered Cookie Dough and Birthday Cake Caramels. Remember, if it looks appealing to the eyes it will be appealing to the taste buds.

Trying to figure out where to put those little Sugarfina Pearls, Confetti Dolci or some of our smaller candies? If you have treats that may be prone to rolling away or more challenging to pick up, place them in a small bowl and put the bowl in the center of the board to create a nice focal point (while also providing easy snacking).

Extra Credit: If you want to play off the charcuterie board theme, you could even pepper in a few of our Martini Olive Almonds to make it look more like a real cheese platter.

Tip 5: Finalize by filling in blanks with candy

Still see some spots where the wax paper is peeking through? Don’t worry! You can easily add a sprinkling of some miscellaneous sweets, or place sweet floral accents such as yellow daisies or red roses to fill these spaces and make your candy board really pop (bonus points if you have edible flowers). It’s your candy board, so anything goes!

Tip 6: Pair with a Movie

Don’t let quarantine dictate how you celebrate the season. Carve those pumpkins, get dressed up and put on your favorite spooky flicks (personally, we love Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice and Nightmare on Elm Street). Make some popcorn and even a cocktail (stay tuned, as we’re going to share with you some festively fun and devilishly good drinks to make for a boo-zy and spooky night in).

If you’re looking to get a little more festive, create a movie and candy board night with your favorite gal pals via Zoom or FaceTime. “Ooh” and “Ahh” over everyone’s delicious creations, snap some photos for social media (don’t forget to tag @sugarfina so we can howl with delight at your candy boards) and then hunker down to watch scary movies together.
